The Netherlands discover Tachick Lake

A motor home pulled up in front of the office on a fine summer day. A man and a woman climbed out and asked if they could stay a day or two. It turned out they were from the Netherlands and had been touring western Canada for a for several years. They would store their motor home over the winter in Calgary and tour in the summer. This was to be their last trip. They were working their way back to Calgary where they would sell the motor home and return to the Netherlands for good.

They wished that when their children were young they had moved to Canada. Now with a grown family and grandchildren at home it was too late. Revisits to Canada would be through photos acquired on their trips. A whole wall of their apartment is dedicated to favourite wildlife shots and scenic views. During their stay many new photos of nesting bald eagles were acquired but they really wanted to capture a few closer shots of the White pelicans that spend the summer at Tachick Lake, so out in the boat we went. As we cruised the lake they were able to see how the Pelicans fish together as a team and a number of close-up shots were acquired for his wall at home. We pulled into another small bay looking for more Pelicans and saw some tree branches floating in the lake. I was commenting that their hadn’t been any trees in the lake the day before when the branches changed into two four point Mule deer bucks out for a morning swim. That’s when Murphy's Law kicked in. We ran out of film and had to reload. The Mule deer were kind enough to pose in the edge of the water for a couple of quick shots and then drifted into the trees. As it turned out a two day stay turned into two weeks. They decided Tachick Lake was to be their last stop in Canada and would drive directly to Calgary and fly home the next day.
